Sweet Adelines International is committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance. As part of that commitment, the organization has created the Young Women in Harmony Program to assist music educators in including this style of music in their choral repertoire. Barbershop style, four voice parts performed a cappella, creates exciting chords and helps to develop strong, independent singers.
The Young Women In Harmony program teaches emerging voices the skills, joy and rewards of performing and singing four-part harmony, barbershop style.
Young Women in Harmony delivers both musical excellence and education while it gives young women a taste of show business. This program provides educational tools to teach young women singers the joy of performing this American vocal music art form.
The Spirit of Syracuse is dedicated to this mission and has a number of programs to offer young singers and music educators. If you are a singer 25 years old or younger, or a music educator working with young women, contact the Spirit of Syracuse and talk to us about how we can help you!

Spirit of Syracuse Sponsors Youth to Harmony Explosion Camp at Hobart College
For one intense, four-day period in July, the campus of Hobart College in Geneva, NY, hosts Harmony Explosion, a music camp specializing in teaching the barbershop craft to youth from across the Northeast United States and Canada. For a third year in a row, members of the Spirit of Syracuse provided funding to ensure full scholarships for several local middle school and high school students.
In addition, we are proud to claim that once again, a member of the Spirit of Syracuse is the first Sweet Adeline to be invited to act as a faculty for the event. Sky Harris is Choral Music Teacher in Liverpool, NY and a 4-year member of the Spirit of Syracuse.
Sky says, “My girls had an incredible time getting to know me and each other, learning about barbershop and the addicting joy of 4-part harmony, and teaching the boys that girls can sing tags over the dinner table too! I cannot thank my sisters in the SOS enough for the difference their support has made in my students’ lives, and by extension, the positive difference those girls have made in changing the environment of the choral program at our school.”
Also, joining the chorus as members who got bitten by the "barbershop bug" at Harmony Camp are Kaylee Bartlett and Rachel Ward, with more to follow soon!
Community A cappella Festivals
As a way to share the Barbershop style, the Spirit of Syracuse Chorus performs free of charge on many different youth-oriented a cappella programs throughout Central New York. These programs are presented in conjunction with school-sponsored events, many of which include youth groups and young singers who are experiencing a cappella singing as a part of their school’s curriculum.
School and Community Educational Events
The Spirit of Syracuse has as one of its goals for the future to serve as advocates for life-long singing and is dedicated to exposing people of all ages to the joy of 4-part, a cappella singing in the barbershop style. Both the chorus and quartets of the SOS have begun to offer school visits and community educational events to share the art of barbershop first-hand with singers throughout Central New York. If you are interested in bringing 4-part harmony into your world, contact the Spirit of Syracuse!
